Extensions
Best Practices
- It is best to remember that all extension hair is “2nd Life” hair. You want to treat your extensions like very blonde hair. Your need to take home pro care products, and follow all home care recommendations for the best experience with your extensions.
- Come see us once a month! If you do not have 4-6 color maintenance, come get a blow dry. This will allow us to thoroughly detangle, shampoo, and style your extensions. We can also check on your install and offer tips, or move your maintenance appointment if needed.
- Stick to your maintenance appointment schedule. Your move ups and installs are scheduled with your lifestyle, hair goals, and hair type in mind. Coming in later than recommended can lead to matting, excessive shedding, or damage to your hair and hair extensions.
- Shampoo your extensions 1-2 times every 7-10 days if possible. “Top washes” and dry shampoo are your friends.
- Time your new hair orders around trips. Sun, fun, and water are hard on extensions, it is often best to order new hair after a trip, not before.
- We want you to LOVE your hair, all recommendations and instructions are so you can have the best possible experience!
Maintenance: Sew in wefts
- How to wash – Thoroughly wet hair, and sew in track lines. Shampoo hair that lives above the rows, section away and shampoo hair that lives in between rows, section away and shampoo hair that lives under the rows. Rinse thoroughly, repeat. Condition each row and natural hair, rinse thoroughly. Avoid getting conditioners or hair masks directly on the track or bead line. Apply leave conditioner or leave in treatments on towel dried hair to extensions after shampooing.
- How to brush – Section out hair that lives under the rows and detangle from the ends of hair to roots, section out each row and detangle from the ends of the hair to the sew in line (support track line with one hand). Detangle hair that lives above sew-ins. Brush all together once detangled.
- How to dry – Sew in wefts are one of the few extension installs that can be airdried. Make sure to towel dry thoroughly and apply any wet stylers. (You can diffuse at this step if you want) To blow dry – apply styling products and blowdry all over until natural hair and extensions feel 90% dry. Use a paddle brush, round brush, or brush dryer to dry in the same sections used to detangle.
- Hot tools – Use a heat protectant and style with a hot tool in the same section used to detangle and blowdry.
- How to sleep – Gather all natural and extension hair into either a loose top knot (think pineapple) with a large scrunchy. Or gather all natural and extension hair to one or two loose low braids tied off with scrunchies. Ask your stylist specifically about overnight curl methods to make sure the one you are using is conducive to your install.
- Sun, fun, and water care – Sunscreen can make your extensions change color (green or peach) Please use MINERAL sunscreen only. NO AEROSOL. If you are going in the ocean or pool – gather hair into a top knot or braid after applying a liberal amount of leave in. Please keep in mind that sun, salt water, and chlorine can shorten the life of your extensions. If your extensions are light blonde – CHLORINE IS NOT YOUR FRIEND.
- Notify your stylist promptly if you notice matting, slippage, or have unusual discomfort.
Maintenance: Tape- Ins
- How to wash – Thoroughly wet hair, make sure hair is wet around all tape tabs. Especially in the center of your head, and the bottom hairline. Shampoo hair that lives above the tape tabs, section away and shampoo hair that lives around each tape tab, section away and shampoo hair that live under the tape tabs. Rinse thoroughly, repeat. Condition ends of natural hair and tape-in hair, make sure to avoid getting conditioner or hair mask on the tape tabs. Rinse thoroughly. Apply leave conditioner or leave in treatments on towel dried hair to extensions after shampooing. Avoid tape tabs with all hair products.
- How to brush – Section out hair that lives under the tape tabs and detangle from the ends of hair to roots, section out each row of tape-ins and detangle from the ends of the hair to the tape-in tab (support tabs with one hand). As you work through each row, make sure to separate each tape-in from each other. They should not be matting or sticking together. This step will ensure maximum life of the install, and minimal shedding upon removal. Detangle hair that lives above tape-ins. Brush all together once detangled
- How to dry -Tape-ins must be blow dried every time they are shampooed or wet. Allowing hair to air dry will shorten the life of your install, and can cause the tape to slip.
Make sure to keep hot tools on 340 degrees or lower. Keep hot tool usage to a maximum of 3 times per week. Over using hot tools on hair extensions can cause your extensions to need to be replaced faster.
NO AEROSOL. If you are going in the ocean or pool – gather hair into a top knot or braid and DO NOT get it wet. Tape-ins may slip and move if they are wet for long periods of time.
- Notify your stylist promptly if you notice matting, slippage, or have unusual discomfort.
Maintenance: K-Tips
- How to wash – Thoroughly wet hair, make sure hair is wet hairline to hairline – especially center area at the back of your head. Shampoo hair that lives above the K-Tips, section away, and shampoo hair that lives around each K-tip and the roots of each K-tip. Be careful to not tangle hair into K-tips. Section away and shampoo hair that lives under the K-tips. Rinse thoroughly, repeat. Condition ends of natural hair and K-tip hair, make sure to avoid getting conditioner or hair mask on the K-tip bonds. Rinse thoroughly. Apply leave conditioner or leave in treatments on towel dried hair to extensions after shampooing. Avoid K-tip bonds with all hair products.
- How to brush – Section out hair that lives under the K-tips and detangle from the ends of hair to roots, section out each row of K-tips and detangle from the ends of the hair to the K-tip bond (support bonds with one hand). As you work through each row of K-tips, make sure to separate the K-tips from each other. They should not be bonding together. This step will ensure the maximum life of your install, and minimal shedding upon removal. Detangle hair that lives above K-tips. Brush all together once detangled.
- How to dry – K-tips must be blow dried every time they are shampooed or wet. Allowing hair to air dry will shorten the life of your install.
Maintenance: Tape- In Toppers
- How to wash – Thoroughly wet hair including the lace of the topper, make sure hair is wet that is outside of the topper, all the way to the back hairline. Shampoo lace and hair of the topper, section away and shampoo natural hair that lives outside of the topper. Rinse thoroughly, repeat. Condition ends of natural hair and ends of the topper, make sure to avoid getting conditioner or hair mask on the lace and tape tabs of the topper. Rinse thoroughly. Apply leave conditioner or leave in treatments on towel dried hair to extensions after shampooing. Avoid tape tabs and topper lace with all hair products.
- How to brush – Section out hair that lives outside of the topper and detangle from the ends of hair to roots. Detangle the topper end to lace (support lace with one hand). Brush all together once detangled
- How to dry -Toppers must be blow dried every time they are shampooed or wet. Allowing hair to air dry will shorten the life of your install, and cause discomfort or itching under the topper. Make sure to towel dry thoroughly and apply any wet stylers. To blow dry – apply styling products and blowdry all over until natural hair and extensions feel 90% dry. Use a paddle brush, round brush, or brush dryer to dry in the same sections used to detangle.
- Hot tools – Use a heat protectant and style with a hot tool in the same section used to detangle and blowdry.
- How to sleep – Gather all natural and extension hair to one or two loose low braids tied off with scrunchies. Ask your stylist specifically about overnight curl methods to make sure the one you are using is conducive to your install.
- Sun, fun, and water care – Sunscreen can make your extensions change color (green or peach) Please use MINERAL sunscreen only. NO AEROSOL. If you are going in the ocean or pool – gather hair into a top knot or braid and DO NOT get it wet. Your topper may slip or pull if wet for long periods of time.
- Other – Toppers will loosen during the life of the install. Be careful to not pull or brush the topper roughly.
- Multi-method – If you have other types of extensions installed with your topper – follow the care instructions for that type as well as your topper.
- Notify your stylist promptly if you notice matting, slippage, or have unusual discomfort.
Maintenance: Fairy Hair/Feathers/Wraps
- How to wash – Thoroughly wet hair hairline to hairline, being mindful of your beads that hold your extension. Shampoo hairline to hairline, and around the beads. Rinse thoroughly, repeat. Apply conditioner to ends of hair, avoid getting conditioner around beads. Rinse thoroughly. Apply leave conditioner or leave in treatments on towel dried hair after shampooing. Avoid beads with all hair products.
- How to brush – Detangle from the ends of hair to roots, be mindful of the beads, do not brush through them. Bush hair altogether once detangled.
- How to dry -Fairy hair, feathers, and wraps may be air dried or blow dried. Make sure to avoid excessive heat directly on the fairy hair if blow drying. If you have a wrap or feather, avoid using the blow dryer on them.
- Hot tools – Use a heat protectant and style with a hot tool in the same section used to detangle and blowdry. Make sure to not apply excessive heat to fairy hair, they will accept some style, but not exactly like your natural hair. If you have a wrap or feather, avoid using hot tools on them.
- Sun, fun, and water care – Fairy hair is a synthetic material, feathers are fragile, and wraps are temporary. Sunscreen, sun, chlorine, and salt water may cause the glitter or colors to fade. Fairy hair, feathers, and wraps are meant to be replaced at each install.
- Notify your stylist promptly if you notice matting, slippage, or have unusual discomfort.
Maintenance: Loc Extensions
- How to wash – Thoroughly wet hair, make sure hair is wet hairline to hairline – especially center area at the back of your head. If you have hair outside of your loc extensions, shampoo then section away. Shampoo roots of each loc extension, it is easiest to work in rows. Rinse thoroughly, repeat. Condition ends of natural hair and loc extensions, make sure to avoid getting conditioner or hair mask on the bonds/roots of the locs. Rinse thoroughly. Apply leave in conditioner or leave in treatments on towel dried hair to loc extensions after shampooing. Avoid loc extension bonds with all hair products.
- How to brush – If you have hair that lives outside of the loc extensions, detangle ends to roots, then section away. Working in rows, separate each loc extension from each other at the root. This step ensures the maximum life of your install, and minimal shedding upon removal.
- How to dry – If you have hair that lives outside of the loc extensions, apply stylers and air dry or blow dry as desired. Towel dry loc extensions thoroughly – they hold more water than you think, then allow to air dry.
- Hot tools – If you have hair that lives outside of the loc extensions, use a heat protectant and style with a hot tool as desired.
If your loc extensions are synthetic: sun, sunscreen, chlorine, and saltwater will cause the colors to fade more rapidly.
- Notify your stylist promptly if you notice matting, slippage, or have unusual discomfort.
Maintenance: Temporary Extensions (Clip ins, halos, wigs, toppers, etc.)
- How to wash (does not need to be done often) – With temporary extension out, thoroughly wet hair extension roots to ends. Gently shampoo roots to end of extension. If doing a topper or wig, shampoo lace cap gently. Rinse thoroughly, repeat. Condition ends of the extensions, make sure to avoid getting conditioner or hair mask on the root/bonds/lace of the extensions. Rinse thoroughly. Apply leave in conditioner or leave in treatments on towel dried hair extensions.
- How to brush after washing – Hold extension by bond or top/hang extension on rack or hanger/put wig or topper on doll head: Detangle ends to roots. Towel dry again if hair is still dripping. Allow to air dry for a few minutes before drying.
- How to dry – Use dry and rough dry hair extension, topper, or wig with the blow dryer pointing to the floor. Do not blow dry against the grain of the hair (that will make them frizzy). Once hair extensions feel 90% dry, use a paddle or round brush to smooth and complete drying.
- Hot tools – Spray with heat protectant and smooth, curl, or style as desired. You may also do this while wearing the extensions, topper, or wig. This can also be done to touch up styles in between shampooing your extensions, topper, or wig.
- How to store – Place your hair, topper, or wig in a hair storage bag, hang on extension hanger, place on doll head, or lay flat in a dry place.
- Synthetic hair – Synthetic hair comes pre styled, and regular blow drying or hot tool styling will not work. You can change how synthetic hair lays with a steamer, or by wet setting it on rollers or in pin curls. Synthetic hair is cuttable, your stylist can determine on a case by case basis.
- Sun, fun, and water care – Do not wear temporary extensions, toppers, or wigs in the pool, ocean, or while doing vigorous exercise.
Braids, Locs, Weaves & Silk Press
Maintenance: Braids
- Braids (Knotless & Protective Styles)
Not Recommended For:
Clients with root breakage, thinning edges, or hair shorter than 4 inches. - Protect at Night: Always tie your hair down with a silk or satin scarf/bonnet, or sleep on a silk pillowcase to minimize frizz and breakage.
- Moisturize Regularly: Spritz your scalp and roots with a leave-in conditioner, braid spray, or a DIY mix (water + leave-in + a few drops of oil). Lightly mist the braids—not soak them.
- Scalp Care: Soothe dryness or itchiness with diluted tea tree or peppermint oil. Avoid scratching—use your fingertips or a scalp massager instead.
- Limit Tension & Styling: Avoid tight ponytails or frequent re-styling to protect your edges and prevent breakage.
- Recommended Time Before Removal:
- Large Knotless Braids: Up to 4 weeks
- Medium/Small Braids: Up to 6–8 weeks
Maintenance: Locs (Starter to Mature)
Starter Locs
- Wait to Wash: Avoid washing for the first 3–4 weeks (varies by hair type and loc method).
- Night Protection: Use a satin/silk scarf or bonnet to reduce frizz and lint.
- Hands Off: Avoid frequent twisting or manipulation—let your locs settle.
- Moisturize Gently: Use a light leave-in spray or mix of water and natural oils (like jojoba or tea tree) to keep dryness away.
- Budding to Mature Locs
Cleansing: Shampoo every 1–2 weeks using a residue-free formula. Try an apple cider vinegar rinse for occasional detox. - Retwisting: Every 4–8 weeks depending on growth and preference. Avoid excessive tension.
- Daily Moisture: Lightly spritz with water and a bit of oil. Avoid heavy waxes or creams.
- Drying Matters: After washing, use a microfiber towel and ensure your hair fully dries to prevent odor or mildew.
- Lint Control: Avoid fuzzy towels, cotton pillowcases, and lint-attracting fabrics. A lint roller can help!
Maintenance: Weave
-
Wash Every 1–2 Weeks: Use sulfate-free shampoo and moisturizing conditioner. Detangle before washing and cleanse in a downward motion.
-
Keep It Hydrated: Light leave-in conditioners or oils (argan, jojoba, or weave-specific) help keep both natural hair and extensions healthy.
-
Dry Thoroughly: Air dry when possible or use a hooded dryer. Make sure your scalp and tracks are fully dry.
-
Scalp Health: Use light oil treatments or soothing oils (like tea tree or peppermint) to reduce itchiness and flaking.
-
Night Routine: Wrap hair in satin or silk and consider braiding/twisting the weave at night to prevent tangling.
-
Heat Caution: Use minimal heat, and always apply a heat protectant if using hot tools.
-
Recommended Removal: Take out weaves after 6–8 weeks to prevent matting and breakage. Let your natural hair breathe before reinstalling.
Maintenance: Silk Press
- Keep Moisture Away: Avoid water, steam, and sweat. Use a shower cap and wrap your hair during showers or steamy activities.
-
Wrap at Night: Use a silk or satin scarf, bonnet, or pillowcase to maintain sleekness and prevent frizz.
-
No Heavy Products: Stay away from oils, creams, or butters that weigh hair down. Use a light serum if needed.
-
Smart Touch-Ups: Only flat iron when necessary, on low heat, and always with heat protectant.
-
Limit Physical Activity: Sweat can revert your press. Wear a sweatband and wrap your hair tightly if working out.
-
Edge Care: Light edge control or pomade is fine—just don’t overdo it.
-
Recommended Duration: A silk press typically lasts 1–2 weeks depending on your hair texture and routine. Longer wear can lead to dryness without proper care.
